Young People Can Create Change
ISSYS RODRIGUEZ, 11TH GRADE

When people talk about solving global problems, young people are sometimes left out of the
conversation. Issues such as climate change, healthcare inequality, poverty, and
discrimination can seem too large for students to influence. But young people can contribute
to change in meaningful ways.
One of the simplest ways to make a difference is through education. Learning about an issue
allows us to understand what is happening before deciding how we can help. It also makes it
easier to recognize misinformation and share accurate information with others.
Young people can also become involved in their communities. Volunteering, environmental
cleanups, fundraising, tutoring, awareness campaigns, and school organizations are all ways
students can contribute.
Technology provides another opportunity. Social media allows young people to communicate
with people outside their immediate communities. A well-researched post can introduce
someone to an issue they had never considered before.
However, being involved does not mean that every young person needs to become an
activist or solve a global problem alone. Sometimes participation can be as simple as
helping with a local project or learning about an issue.
Small actions can also influence other people. One student who starts a recycling initiative
may encourage classmates to participate. A group that organizes a fundraiser can help a
community while teaching others about an important cause.
Young people also bring perspectives that are valuable because they are part of the
generation that will experience many future challenges directly.
Creating change does not require waiting until we are adults. We can learn, volunteer,
communicate, and contribute now. The goal is not to do everything, but to recognize that our
actions can have an impact when we use them responsibly.
